MND Drilling & Services has finished the third and final deep geothermal well near Košice as part of the Geoterm Košice project. This project is the largest geothermal project in Slovakia and one of the most significant in Europe.
MND Drilling & Services won the public tender and was chosen to be the general contractor for the project's deep drilling operations. Drilling began in October 2025, and all three wells were finished by May 2026. The energy produced from the wells will be used to heat homes in Košice and the surrounding area. In the first phase, the project will cover about 20% of the city's heating needs. In the future, the project will be expanded to cover up to 55% of the city's heating needs.
Geoterm Košice is developing the project. This company is owned by Slovenský plynárenský priemysel and Energetický priemyslový holding. MH Teplárenský holding is also involved in the project.
MND is responsible for the engineering design and the drilling operations. They use their extensive technical expertise in deep drilling projects.
The drilling phase is now complete, so construction will begin on a heat exchange station and a nearly 16-kilometer hot water pipeline. This pipeline will connect the site to Košice. Heat will be delivered to people's homes in early 2029. The project's total installed capacity is expected to reach 30 MW. Its main goals are to replace part of the heat currently generated from fossil fuels, reduce CO2 emissions, and ensure a stable, long-term heat supply.
"What I like most about this project is that the expert teams at MND Drilling & Services and Geoterm Košice are working closely together. During the first well, there were problems with the land that could have caused the well to fail. The project could have cost a lot more than planned. Thanks to the expertise, good judgment, and effective decision-making of everyone involved, these risks were successfully reduced, resulting in one of the most successful projects in the entire region. Looking ahead, I hope MND Drilling & Services will have the opportunity to work with more investors in geothermal energy projects who demonstrate the same level of professionalism and long-term vision that we experienced throughout this project."
