MND has been active in Ukraine since 2014 through its subsidiary, MND Ukraine, which initially focused on the western part of the country and has more recently expanded eastward. Despite the challenging conditions caused by the war, MND has not only maintained its operations but significantly expanded them. Its ambition is to become the largest private natural gas producer in Ukraine.
In 2023, MND extracted approximately 60 million cubic metres of gas. This year, MND aims to triple last year’s gas production volume. Gas fields in Western Ukraine play a key role in this growth. “Our success is built on two key pillars that complement each other. In Lviv, we have a strong team that operates effectively thanks to the support from Hodonín,” explains Lukáš Svozil, Director of MND Ukraine.
MND’s efforts extend well beyond extraction. The company is investing in long-term infrastructure, supporting local communities, and expanding into renewable energy. In 2024, together with Ukrainian partner Eco-Optima, MND completed the construction of the Oriv wind farm in the Lviv region. The ten turbines, with a total capacity of 59 MW, will generate nearly 162 GWh of electricity annually, enough to supply more than 50,000 households. Despite the war and difficult logistics, the €61.5 million project was successfully delivered.
The good news is that production is increasing. This gives us sufficient resources to innovate and continue investing in sustainable energy.
MND, together with the Karel Komárek Family Foundation (KKFF), has consistently supported Ukraine and its people. Immediately after the outbreak of the war, 16 lorries carrying humanitarian aid were dispatched to Ukraine, and accommodation was provided in Prague for refugee mothers and their children. MND also enabled employees from Ukraine to relocate to the Czech Republic.
On a local level, MND Ukraine helped provide emergency power to the city of Irpin by purchasing four large diesel generators. The group has also supported psychological assistance for children affected by the war through the GEN project, and contributed to the Archa initiative, which is helping to preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage. In addition, MND has actively supported the Ukrainian army by funding drones, medical supplies, and other essential equipment.
MND’s story in Ukraine demonstrates that with a clear vision and strong determination, it is possible to build a stable and responsible business even in the most difficult of times while also contributing to the country’s energy resilience and social recovery.
